Where to Drink Matcha in NYC

Where to Drink Matcha in NYC

Matcha, matcha, matcha.

It isn’t new. In fact, it’s pretty much ancient. But by the sheer amount it being consumed throughout Williamsburg, you’d think it were the love child of kale and kombucha. But the thing is…matcha has some pretty crazy health benefits, including 137 times the amount of antioxidants you’ll find in regular green tea. You’re getting a lot more bang for your buck, because instead of infusing hot water with tea leaves, you’re actually consuming them in powdered form. Already a matcha maniac or thinking of seeing what the fuss is about? Test the (infused) waters at one of New York’s many purveyors of matcha!

Roasting Plant

Known as a serious coffee bar for bean snobs, the Roasting Plant has recently begun whipping up a killer matcha latte sweetened with a touch of vanilla. Be sure to ask for almond milk!

75 Greenwich Ave, West Village
81 Orchard St, Lower East Side

Not to be confused with the popular Japanese ramen joint Ippudo, Ippodo is another Tokyo import, the only international branch of the famed tea shop outside of Japan. In addition to offering a variety of the highest grade matcha powder in the city, the small shop also offers an extensive menu of matcha drinks for takeaway, ranging from the classic to the creative (matcha slushie, anyone?)

125 E 39th St, Midtown

Whether or not you’ve been here, you’ve probably scrolled past a picture of their instafamous matcha lattes on your feed. A blogger favorite, the Chalait latte isn’t just another pretty face… it tastes good, too.

1216 Broadway, Nomad
75 9th Ave, at Chelsea Market, Chelsea

Matchabar is the city’s first cafe dedicated to the trendy drink. Recently relocated from Williamsburg to Chelsea, the matcha shop offers a bevy of delightfully untraditional matcha drinks, like iced cucumber or watermelon matcha, and matcha cupcakes. If you like, you can even take home your own matcha kit.

256 W 15th St, Chelsea

While Mamman is known for its chocolate chip cookie, the soho shop is gaining ground for its stellar matcha latte.

239 Centre St, Soho
211 W Broadway, Tribeca
80 Kent St, Greenpoint

A Japanese tea house in the East Village, this is the place to go for a traditional cup of matcha. Sit down, relax, and enjoy, and order a few Japanese sweets while you’re at it.

230 E 9th St, 2nd Floor, East Village
